Interested In Starting A Blog? Here are Ten Types Of Popular Blogs To Think About

Okay, the First Quarter of 2019 is over and your ideas about starting a blog are still on hold. It happens, because there are always dozens of reasons that you don't have time to begin blogging. And then, even if you have worlds of time, there's still writer's block to fall back on. So, once again make a deadline for yourself: In the fist month of the second quarter of 2019 "I will start my blog!"

Where to start? Pick a topic. The ten best types of blogs to start are the following:

1. Finance

2. Health and Fitness

3. Make money online

4. Beauty and fashion

5. Product reviews

6. Food blogs

7. Travel

8. Lifestyle

9. Wedding blogs

10. Digital marketing

So, think for a second and jot down the four topics that have immediate interest for you based on your own readership of blogs or personal interest.
Second, jot down the four topics in which you have some knowledge base. The topics that get jotted twice are a good place to start, because you will have interest in the blog topic and some basis for developing more curiosity around a topic with which you are already familiar.

Next, do some research, i.e. Google and read blogs in the area that you have chosen. Then write some short posts and start blogging right here on blogger. It's fast and easy.

More About Branding and How Not to Waste Money Promoting Your Business Product or Service

Let's first start with the knowledge that in today's fast-paced world filled with busy people you have to not only get people's attention but also deliver a message and visual that they can connect to your product or service or that they can hear and connect to your product or service. This is absolutely necessary particularly with a small budget. Small advertisers won't have the budget to bank-roll a full out multi-media campaign and would be wise to stick to either print, TV or radio in addition to social media.

Furthermore, determine who you are trying to reach, i.e. where will you find most of your customers. Are they readers, watchers or listeners? Each of these particular mediums are segmented, some are absolutely splintered with choices, making it more important to select the right one. If prestige is vital to sales of you product or service and you determine that you have readers as a strong market segment, then you will want to determine which print medium reaches your future customers at the lowest cost. Notice, it is not as important how many people you reach as it is how many of your potential customers that you reach. Circulation is a factor, but so is image and repeat readership by a group of people who might be in the market for what you are offering.

In magazines, if you can afford it, a full page 4-color ad placed on a right-hand page either near the front or within or next to an article or regular feature will be the best choice. If you can't budget a full page, choose a 1/2, 1/3 or 1/4 page ad on a right hand facing page. Be sure to use you logo consistently and have a memorable slogan placed beneath it to help the reader remember you company.

Television is still a great medium for those who watch live TV, choosing not to record then play back and fast-forward through commercials. News for instance is more likely to be watched live. Generally, people who have more leisure time at home are more likely to watch live. That's why many companies such as home improvement, insurance, etc. run commercials in their local market morning TV programs. People selling cars, phones, etc. are more likely to connect with morning or evening news viewers, because this group includes a broader slice of their market, both the workplace commuters, the retired, semi-retired or homemaker. For small budget TV advertising it is important to pick a slice of time and stick to it until you see results. That's why you should be sure to ask your customers how they heard about you.

Even national TV advertisers with huge budgets often fail to maximize their product or service within their 30-sec. spot. Just because their brand is well known doesn't mean that they should stop showing the name of their product or service on screen and if they have a mascot, a piece of music or color identified with their brand or logo it reinforces their brand if they continue to use these in their spots. Consider Target. Their logo is red, the dominate color in their commercials is red, and their dog mascot is a visual. How can you watch their commercial and not know you have seen a Target commercial?

For radio advertising the same principle of choosing a slice of time when your potential customers are likely to be listening is key. To make the right buy you can't simply choose a radio format that you like, you'll need some research from all of your potential stations. They will have a breakdown by age, male or female [those are still the largest categories] by time slot, etc. Drive time is likely where you will have the ears of more people, but you also have to consider morning, noon or afternoon, i.e. school car-pool time or commute from work to home time. You have to consider what you will say that distinguishes you from your main competitors. To do this you have to know what your competitors are saying and how they are saying it.

For instance, are their commercials too crammed with words to even understand? Are they easy for listeners to "tune out" because they don't know what they're saying anyway. Or, do your competitors that run really boring commercials that are almost generic and like every other company in their same business sector? If so, you have a real advantage to be the new business that knows their market, speaks to their market in an interesting manner, and tells listeners some real benefits about their product or service. If you can afford a few seconds of original music and have a catchy slogan, even better. Marketers are rediscovering that a "jingle" is really memorable decade after decade.

{I blogged earlier about companies such as Nationwide Insurance which in a crowded advertising market was not using their very memorable jingle. Now, they are using it and driving it home in a new way with a star quarterback and a country music star. Good for them! Not only will they reconnect with people who heard that jingle years ago, but they will reach new customers.}

Also, realize that if your customer is likely to be listening to their own play list, fast-forward through recorded TV and not a big reader of mags or newspapers, you will have to rely on product/service brochures, online advertising, blogs, point of sale displays, vehicle wraps, event sponsorships, etc. It will be even more important that your messaging and packaging be distinctive and appealing to your particular market.

Brands Sure Can Waste Some Money on Super Bowl Commercials

Okay, I want to weigh in on the Super Bowl commercials and I always like to give a bit of time to reflect. My main take away this year was the dominance of beer commercials and not what I would have expected. These were the "greening" of the genre with brands touting their natural and organic qualities.

Bud placed a major communication on their lack of corn syrup in their Lite Beer, which was a well placed slap at their lite beer competitors. The famous Budweiser Clydesdale's even galloped into the wind against a backdrop of wind turbines. Again, Bud sent out a timely message to a growing market of eco-conscious and health-conscious consumers.

KIA? "What was KIA thinking" when they filmed their new large 8-passenger Telluride slogging through muddy water. Why not have shown it off in high end advantage against the ski slopes of Telluride for a little extra name impression.

Pepsi's "Just Okay" commercial certainly wasted big dollars selling the lack luster "We're okay" message. What smart company spends millions to do that? The same company that spent a million or so to tweak its classic logo into a "smile". Just saying, isn't there something about the product that is better than just okay? If not why not co-brand it with something else like your KFC or Taco Bell brands. Or, you could have jumped on the Super Bowl's health train and touted your Quaker Oat brand.

Olay's "Killer Skin" was another "why did they do that moment? Who wants to buy a product that gives them dead skin. I mean vampires are dead and that was their pay off visual. A shame that a well respected product line aimed at an older women had to fast forward to death.

Really, Hyundai spent how much for their Super Bowl viewing audience watch an elevator go up and down. Some advertising has complete lost track for trying to promote their product as part of their brand. Should I just ride an elevator and call Uber or Lyft? Why buy a Hyundai?

Bon & Viv's Spiked Seltzer was a complete waste. For what to me was a new product, I learned nothing. Why the under water tank setting? Why not some more emphasis on what they heck it is and what I should look for in a store.

The game was more riveting than the commercials.

The True Sign of Intelligence is not Knowledge but Imagination

I've never blogged about my hobbies. So you may think, how is that relevant to a business blog? Here's why. One of my hobbies is reading about Physics. It was my science elective in high school, which just goes to show the impact of those electives.

My hobby has brought me into the minds of many great thinkers who were and are good at both the big picture and the small picture. One that has stood the test of time is, of course, Einstein.

Although I've read the book "The Other Einstein" in which his first wife is given credit for some of his ideas, you have to admire a man with a boring patent office job who continued to spend his spare time figuring out how the universe works. Furthermore, his theories have stood the test of time. Like myself, Einstein was no mathematical genius, which reassuringly didn't hinder his thought processes. In fact, he is the source for some of my favorite inspirational quotes.

"The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination."

"Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school."

"The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science."

The take away here is the fact that much of business is challenging and a bit boring. Getting too entrenched in your everyday thoughts can carve a rut sometimes one that feels as deep as the Mariana Trench, which is considered to be the deepest part of the Earth's surface.

Devote more time to free and imaginative thought. It can go a long way toward finding small problem solutions that contribute to your own enterprise's big picture. Or take a wider and wider look at the scope of your entire business field and find creative ways to improve what you offer.

Dotbiz: Some New Business Stats For Bloggers and Other Content Providers to Consider

What does everyone need? Some new stats to ponder. Well it's likely to come as no surprise that if you are starting a business launching one in a profitable sector would be the thing to do. Same for blogging. If you're still trying to find your niche, before jumping into the blog stream, consider these five industries that rate as having the brightest futures according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and market research firm IBISWorld.

The top two job sector increases predicted by the BLS will be in the eco fields of photovoltaic installers and turbine service technicians. If you have friends in these industries, suggest blogging for them or just cover these sectors on your own to support the growing interest among consumers.

. Employment for solar photovoltaic (PV) installers is projected to grow 105 percent from 2016 to 2026, much faster than the average for all other occupations. So there will be a corresponding need for bloggers to serve installers whether they are self employed entrepreneurs or employed by a manufacturer of panels.

. Wind turbine service technicians will see their job sector grow 96 percent from 2016 to 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations. Because wind electricity generation is expected to grow rapidly over the coming decade, additional technicians will be needed to install and maintain new turbines. Job prospects are expected to be excellent.

Other top areas include the following:

. Health care
About half of the 20 occupations projected to have the highest percentage increase in employment by 2026 are in the health industry, according to the BLS. Meeting the needs of an aging population creates increased demand for physical therapists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and other health care specialists to open their own practices. So, if you have any interest in these fields or friends in these fields, who may need help with blogging, this category is a no-brainer.

. Information technology
The information technology sector will grow 13% from 2016 to 2026, according to BLS, a rate that is faster than the average for all occupations. Information security analysts, in particular, are expected to see a boost in demand which the BLS predicts will spike 28% in growth during this same time period.

. Other personal care services
The broad category of “personal care services” was also earmarked by the BLS as one of the fastest-growing industries based on employment. This includes massage therapy, tattoo shops, wedding planning, wellness services and other trades.

. Marijuana
Twenty-nine states and Washington, D.C., have legalized medical marijuana. IBISWorld predicts that industry revenue for medical and recreational marijuana growers will jump 33.5% from 2016 to 2021. The retail side of the business is also expected to see sales increase this year, according to the firm. Blog copy for Maryjanepreneurs would seem to be a good fit, especially info about how to compete in what will one day become an increasingly crowded market.

. E-commerce
With personal disposable income projected to grow 4% a year from 2016 to 2026, according to the BLS, the “quantity and quality of online purchases,” will go up according to IBISWorld. It totally goes without saying that any e-comm business can benefit from creating its own blog to add voice and personality to help set it apart from all of the others in its field.

Does Your Blog Have A Voice? It Can Now with Amazon's Pollycast

Today Amazon is launching a new Amazon Polly WordPress plugin that gives your blog a voice by creating audio versions of your posts. The resulting audio can be played from within the blog post itself, or accessed in podcast form using a feature called Amazon Pollycast.

The plugin itself was jointly designed by Amazon’s AWS team and managed WordPress platform provider WP Engine, and takes advantage of Amazon’s text-to-speech service, Polly.

Polly uses machine learning technologies to deliver more life-like speech. For example, Polly understands that the word “live” would be pronounced differently based on its usage. In the phrases “I live in Seattle” and “Live from New York,” the word is spelled the same but is not spoken in the same way. That means the voices sound more natural than some other, more basic voice-to-text engines.

The Polly speech engine supports 29 languages and its technology has added support for things like whispering, speech marks, a timbre effect, and dynamic range compression. These sorts of voice technology advancements are also things that make Alexa sound more natural, too.

The launch of the WordPress plugin is not the first time Polly has been used to turn digital text to speech, of course. The service itself has always been capable of turning any text such as news articles, blog posts, RSS feeds, PDFs, and more into audio. However, making this functionality available as a WordPress plugin makes Polly more accessible to a wider audience.

However, the plugin is only available to anyone running their own installation of WordPress on their own infrastructure or on AWS, and does require a bit of configuration.

What Can You Learn From Ten of the World's Most Successful Blogs?

•Huff Post

•TMZ

•Business Insider

•Mashable

•Gizmodo

•LifeHacker

•The Verge

•The Daily Beast

•TechCrunch

•Perez Hilton

•The Phrasee blog

For one thing, you can visit each one of them and read their story. These are all giants, but they all started somewhere and wrote about things that attracted more and more readers, which attracted more advertisers or more subscribers. At a glance you can see that many of them cover general areas such as news, or specific news such as entertainment news or tech news.

What does that mean? You can start blogging on specifics and continue to drill down or you can cast a wide net and see what attracts the most readers. Is one way better than the other? Not really, because you will either be very knowledgeable in a particular area or very interested in many different things.

Readers who are interested in a particular topic logically want all of the information that they can find of value to them. Readers who want to stay broadly informed, whether that is about newsmakers worldwide or what's happening locally, will appreciate a site that helps them filter the sea of information.

So what is the most important factor in starting a blog? Is it your knowledge or talent or is it what the vast reading or viewing online populace wants? If you want to eventually make money from your efforts, the answer is both. If there is already a vast number of blogs about your particular area of expertise or interest, you have to ask: what can I contribute that is not already being said or how can I say it better.

If there are only a handful of blogs or sites on a topic that interests you, do come research and ask yourself why are there so few? Is there really very little interest in the subject or could you say that most of the information was not presented in a way that would interest potential readers.

There is general agreement that the opportunity to make money might be easier for bloggers in the following list of niches. Each of these topics are broad enough to be sliced and diced into much finer areas of focus, a fact that allows you to choose what suits you best. Food, for instance, could include a category, such as desserts or foods of a certain country. It could be focused upon things to make at home or the best places to find specific foods. It could be recipes that run the gamut from gourmet to home-style and from grilled to slow cooker. You could become a food critic, a restaurant reviewer, a shopping advisor, a coupon guru, and the list goes on.

How To Enhance the Share Factor of Your Blog or Web Content

Okay, if your first set of 2018 Resolutions have either been checked off or tossed, maybe you're ready for another set that has nothing to do with losing weight or being more organized. If you are a blogger or a content provider why not determine today to make your content more likely to be shared.

Some of the best minds in the business say that making your content more inspirational, useful and topical are three major things that should be top of mind when you work on content. If you can inspire another mind, there's every chance that person will not only visit your blog again, but they may well be inspired to share your link with others.

If your content can focus regularly on information that is useful, people may bookmark your blog or once again pass the info onto others. If you blog with a wide sweep rather than a narrow focus it will be more difficult to maintain usefulness across your reader base. However, even if your readers are drawn from several different areas, the usefulness of the information may still apply.

Keeping your content topical is yet a third way to build readership. The best way of describing topical content is by saying it’s more of a news topic about something that’s happened recently. It tends to become less useful with time. Content that aggregates a swath of useful news of interest to their readers provides a real benefit as long as topical content is a regular occurrence.

How Important are Keywords and Keyword Phrases to My Blog Content's SEO

To increase their share of web traffic, every web blogger should always pay attention to keywords and keyword phrases in their copy. These are the magnets that draw traffic based on intuitive searches on Google. This all begins with keyword research. Know your market and know the words and terms that they will be exploring online.

When you have keyword-optimized content in your blog posts and, use but not over use those words and terms, searchers can find you based on their interests and your keyword "guideposts" that draw them into your content. If you're blogging for business, your blog can become a lead generator.

Please note that keyword phrases [known as long-tail keyword phrases] are increasingly important for rising up in Google search, because the pool of information is massive. If you're writing about fashion just using the word fashion as a keyword puts you into competition with zillions of blogs that use that keyword. However, if you select specific searchable "hot" fashion phrases you are defining the path to your blog for a sizeable group of online searchers by pulling your content up through the fashion word maze and into a smaller pool where it has a better chance to be found.

Very basic informational long-tail keyword phrases might begin with the who, what, where, when, how and why of something. As you search, you run across these all the time and they draw clicks because someone wants to know exactly how or why, etc.
Today, such motivational click phrases as five ways to organize your closet or the top ten places are likely to appear in headlines and meta tags. Likewise, use of the word Tip or Hack [as in an easy way to do something] draw viewers whether you are a fashion blogger, a food blogger or a business blogger.

The key is to incorporate precise words and search terms that your targeted market uses. Then use them, but do not stuff your copy with them. Your copy needs to be readable for your audience to relate to it. In other words don't beat them over the head with certain words and phrases once you get them to your site.

Remember that one of the best thing about blogging [whether you blog is on your website or linked to it] is your ability to slant each blog to a particular reader/searcher.

Find Out More About the Appeal of Your Ads to Consumers

Those who have ads on their blogs or websites can now take advantage of information provided by The Coalition for Better Ads. This organization has developed initial Better Ads Standards for desktop web and mobile web for North America and Europe, based on comprehensive research involving more than 25,000 consumers.

The Coalition’s research identifies the ad experiences that rank lowest across a range of user experience factors, and that are most highly correlated with an increased propensity for consumers to adopt ad blockers. These results define initial Better Ads Standards that identify the ad experiences that fall beneath a threshold of consumer acceptability. Four types of desktop web ads (six tested ad experiences) and eight types of mobile web ads (twelve tested ad experiences) fell beneath this threshold. A summary of these types of ad experiences is presented below.

Extensive consumer input and empirical data shaped the initial Better Ads Standards. While the Coalition’s consumer research was designed to identify the least preferred ad types, it also provides insight into consumers’ evaluation of a far broader range of ad experiences, including those more preferred by consumers. By focusing the definition of Better Ads Standards on the least preferred ad experiences, the Coalition’s methodological approach leaves open the possibility for continued innovation in the development of new ad experiences.
